One of the first things you learn in pickleball school is that you should return deep. But why is that? Most people will give one of the following reasons:
1) it gives you time to get to the net.
2) it keeps your opponents back.
But guess what? Those are both wrong!

You have a great way of examining common wisdom in Pickleball. How about adding one more reason for keeping an opponent back: The thirdshot is far more difficult from back or behind the baseline than from midcourt.

Love the different perspective on this. I totally agree that it does not give you time to get to the net, especially if you return a serve to your opponents midcourt. That says “drive” all day long. 😀 I have heard you say, Mark, that our opponents have free will and they can do whatever they want. If an opponent becomes uncomfortable receiving my deep serves, then you can bet I’ll keep serving them deep! I may also mix up high deep serves with low fast serves. Dislike one? That’s what they get
